    ARRIVING TO PORTO

    BY AIR
    Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) is a 30 minute drive from the city centre. An Uber from here to your hotel in will typically cost €10-20.

    BY TRAIN
    Porto has 2 convenient train stations (São Bento + Campanhã) with easy connections to destinations like Lisbon, the Douro Valley, and Galicia.

    IMPORTANT NOTE FOR WEDDING DAY!

    We will provide transportation to and from the wedding venue on Saturday the 29th, leaving from and returning to central Porto. The last shuttle home from the venue will leave at 3am. For those who want their beauty sleep, we'll arrange earlier shuttles running back to central Porto.We will send exact details in the weeks before.

    getting around

    WALKING
    Porto is designed for ambling on foot without all that much planning. We highly recommend walking as much as possible to soak it up the city and its romance. However, it's also very hilly (tiring, but part of the charm), so please plan accordingly.    TAXI

    The metro system is modern, fast + easy to navigate, and you can pay at the turnstile with Contactless or Apple Pay without needing to use the ticket kiosk.    CAR RENTAL
    Car rentals are also simple + economical if you're considering a road trip. We'd recommend any comparison platform like Kayak or Expedia to find the best deal – just make sure to check the company's reviews.

    WHERE TO STAY

    We recommend making Porto city centre your base throughout the weekend. It's a small city, so you'll always have everything close at hand.The city is full of great hotel and Airbnbs to fit every budget + taste. Just know that May is the beginning of peak season in Porto and can get busy, so we recommend booking as early as possible.Here's a snapshot of our favourite area:

    Anywhere inside the red circle is a great location to stay, right in the heart of the action.     Do you have a gift registry?

    Joining us in Porto is a huge and generous gesture in itself. Corny as it sounds, the best gift will be to have you with us (bringing your A-game on the dance floor!).But for those who take joy in gifting, we encourage you to be creative. In general, we're obsessed with anything that involves good food, travel, or more time with you.Alternatively, you can contribute to our 'Adventure Fund'.     Are children invited?

    Kids are very welcome at the Friday and Sunday events. But parents, we want you to take Saturday night off! The wedding will be adults-only (with the exception of babes-in-arms). If you need help arranging a sitter for Saturday, let us know and we can help.

    what's on the menu?

    We will send out the dinner selection in spring once the catering is finalised. Please flag in your RSVP if you have any dietary restrictions and we'll make sure you're taken care of.

    Anything to remember for the wedding?

    We ask that phones and smart watches are put away during the ceremony. (Yes, mother of the bride, that includes you!) We have a professional photographer to capture the day, and your full, un-technologically-mediated presence is the ultimate gift.

    Do I need a visa to enter europe?

    From late 2026, it seems Brits, Aussies + Americans will need an ETIA to enter Portugal. Please double-check before you fly! It should be easy to get but we’d encourage you to organise it with plenty of time, just in case.Americans: Check that the expiration date of your passport is valid for at least 6 months after the end of your trip (i.e., December 2027).

    When should i arrive?

    We'd recommend arriving to Porto by Friday lunchtime. That way, you can settle into your accommodation and have a little breathing space before the welcome drinks.

    When should i leave?

    Totally up to you! The 'official' schedule wraps up on Sunday around lunchtime after coffee + pastéis. But it might be helpful to remember that Monday is a bank holiday in the US and UK, so stay and enjoy the long weekend if you like!

    HOW DO I GET A MOBILE SIM?

    Most places have wifi and rely on WhatsApp, so it's not completely necessary to have a data plan while you're in Porto.If you'd like a plan and your phone is eSIM compatible (e.g., all iPhones since 2018), we recommend a short-term, data-only plan from Nomad eSIM or Jetpac. You can buy it while you're at home and activate when you're ready using a wifi connection.Otherwise, you can buy a pre-paid SIM at the airport or from the major Portuguese providers (MEO, NOS, Vodafone) using a passport. Just note this might take a little bit longer in the shop!

    PORTO GUIDE

    We love Porto, and we hope you do, too. Below we've listed some of our favourite spots. You can follow this link to save it as a Google Map on your phone for easy navigation. For the restaurants, we'd recommend booking in advance where you can.

    RESTAURANTS

    • Encaixados – Portuguese classic dishes served with a modern twist in a cosy, medieval stone interior. We always end up here every trip we make to Porto – mostly for the duck with port wine reduction.

    • Café Restaurante "O Afonso" – Legendary local tasca with humble interiors serving up classic, rib-sticking fare. Anthony Bourdain stopped here for a francesinha.

    • Solar Moinho de Vento – Upmarket traditional Portuguese, with specialties in beef, chouriços, and shellfish. The pork rice is locally famous.

    • Borboleta – Trendy Mediterranean small plates with a Portuguese twist and great wine list. Ask to sit in the garden!

    BREAKFAST + COFFEE

    • Comum Porto – Solid brunch spot on the main drag in Cedofeita, a lovely neighbourhood full of boutiques, microgalleries, and creative corners.

    • Café Dunas – Literally around the corner from Comum, giving you a flavour of a more traditional Portuguese café that takes its coffee and cakes very, very seriously. Rumour has it the pastéis rival Manteigaria.

    • Garcia + Marquez Café – Exceptional 'third wave' coffee from Latin America with great brunch options and good service.

    BARS

    • Bar Aduela – The kind of tasteful, nearly cramped bar with cobblestoned outdoor seating that could only exist 'on the continent'.

    • Capela Incomum – Gorgeous wine bar tucked away on a leafy residential corner, housed in a converted two-room chapel. Nostalgia + pet nat.

    • Catraio Craft Beer – Microbrewery with a rooftop beergarden in Cedofeita (near Comum) for the hop-minded.

    PASTÉIS DE NATA

    When it comes to pastéis, there's really only one option: Manteigaria. Don't be put off by their being a multi-city chain. They've perfected the pastel. There are multiple locations around the city and you can't go wrong with any. Best enjoyed hot, standing right on the spot, with powdered sugar + cinnamon, ideally alongside an espresso.

    SHOPPING + SPOTS

    • Livraria Lello – Often celebrated as one of the most iconic bookstores in the world, this 120-year-old neo-Manueline shop inspired many, including JK Rowling as she wrote Harry Potter. Be sure to book tickets on the website in advance (the ticket value becomes a voucher in-store), and be prepared to wait in the queue for a while. (Probably not a great idea for Saturday).

    • LOT (Labels of Tomorrow) / The Feeting Room – Sister contemporary clothing + streetwear boutiques with top rising brands from Portugal and beyond. This is where Isabel (accidentally) got that gorgeous red sleeveless getup that gets infinite compliments.

    THE DOURO VALLEY

    If you have time to travel before or after the wedding, we definitely recommend visiting the Douro Valley for a few nights. You can stay at a vineyard, enjoy a wine tasting, and just chill out. It's easy to reach; you're in wine country after a 1.5 hour journey (although you can go further, if you're feeling it!).In the past, we loved our stay at Quinta do Portal. We got there by train, which snakes along the Douro with clear views of the vineyard terraces carved into the mountains, and a quick taxi.You can take the modern train, or get transported into the past and take the historical train. Here's a great guide to both (with tons of photos) explaining the 'most scenic train' in Portugal. If you want to book, you can do so directly with Combóios de Portugal.
